Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her goverment offers various options for migrants in southern Mexico, aiming to deter them from reaching the U.S. border.

“From southern Mexico, we offer different options,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference. “They can stay in Mexico to work, with various possibilities through the Secretary of Labor. They can stay in Mexico at a shelter, or if they wish to return to their countries, we also provide the conditions.”

The Mexican government claims that daily encounters with undocumented migrants at the U.S. border have decreased by 75% as December 2023. However, they also reported a record high of over 925,000 undocumented migrants from January to August, a 132% increase from the previous year.
