Guanajuato, despite being an industrial hub and tourist destination, is Mexico’s deadliest state. Drug trafficking and gang violence, particularly between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New generation cartel, fuel the high homicide rate.
Mexico has seen approximately 480,000 lives lost to criminal violence since 2006, with over 120,000 people missing. The Jalisco cartel, a key player in Guanajuato’s violence, has been designated a foreign terrorist organization.
Last year, Guanajuato recorded over 3,000 murders, the highest number in the country. The violence has continued this year. Last month, 17 bodies were discovered in an abandoned house.Prior to that, seven people, including children, were killed in a shooting where messages alluding to the Santa Rosa de Lima gang were found.
