INGLEWOOD, Calif.— Defending champion Mexico secured a 3-2 victory against the Dominican Republic on saturday in their Concacaf Gold Cup group stage debut.The match, played at SoFi stadium, saw Mexico overcome a slow start in front of 54,309 fans.
Edson Álvarez, a West Ham midfielder, initiated the scoring for Mexico in the 44th minute. Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez increased the led in the 47th minute, followed by defender César Montes in the 53rd minute. Peter González (51st minute) and Edison Azcona (67th minute) responded for the dominican Republic.
Jiménez’s goal marked his 40th with the Mexican national team, placing him six goals behind Jared Borgetti, who holds the second-highest career scoring record for El Tri. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández remains Mexico’s top scorer with 52 goals. The team’s role in the tournament is now as a favorite to win.
