Mexico edges Dominican ​Republic in⁣ Gold Cup Opener

Inglewood,Calif. — Edson Alvarez played a pivotal⁤ role, scoring a goal and assisting ​another,‌ as Mexico secured a ⁢3-2 victory against the​ Dominican ‌Republic in their CONCACAF Gold Cup group A match Saturday night.The defending champion, Mexico,⁤ now holds 3 points⁢ with a ‌1-0-0 ​record.

Raul Jimenez and Cesar Montes also contributed⁢ goals for mexico.The Dominican Republic, making⁢ their Gold cup debut, saw Peter Gonzalez and Edison ⁤Azcona find the​ net.

Mexico initiated the scoring in ‍the 44th minute. Orbelin Pineda delivered a cross ‍that found Alvarez,who headed the ball ​into the ‍net,giving⁣ Mexico ‍a 1-0⁣ lead. Early in ⁣the second half, Jimenez extended Mexico’s advantage with a right-footed shot in the 47th minute.

the Dominican Republic responded in the 51st minute when Gonzalez scored‍ with a left-footed shot. However, Mexico quickly countered. Two‍ minutes later, following a corner kick by Alexis Vega, Alvarez headed the ball, deflecting off Montes and into the⁤ goal, increasing Mexico’s⁢ lead to 3-1.

Azcona‍ narrowed the gap⁤ for the‍ Dominican ‍Republic with a right-footed ⁤shot that deflected ⁤off a defender, making the​ score 3-2.
