México received a two-month extension from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to contain the measles outbreak, with Jalisco and Chiapas being the states reporting the most cases and where vaccination has been intensified, informed the Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich.
The country was summoned by PAHO to a virtual meeting next April to review whether it maintains its status as a measles-free country, given the active outbreak.
Kershenobich mentioned at the start of his intervention in the morning press conference that “Canada has already lost its measles-free status; the United States requested a two-month extension and we have also signed up for those two months to try to control the outbreak.”
He noted that Mexico has 23 million 529 measles vaccines available.In 2025, 13 million 872 thousand were distributed and this year “we have distributed three million 836 thousand.”
Last year they acquired 10 million 800 thousand vaccines and “this year, 27 million 365 thousand.”
That is, he emphasized, “we have enough vaccines for the next two years to continue advancing in the vaccination of the entire population.”
He informed that each institute of the health sector has set goals for immunization.
