Chennai Super Kings’ leading run-scorer Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18, 2026. The franchise confirmed that Mhatre will require a rehabilitation period of six to 12 weeks, effectively ending his participation in the tournament.

The injury occurred while Mhatre was taking a second run during CSK’s innings against SRH. He continued batting after the initial incident but was eventually dismissed and had to be assisted off the field by physio Tommy Simsek and teammate Ramakrishna Ghosh. Scans conducted on Monday, April 20, 2026, confirmed the extent of the hamstring tear, leading to the official announcement via CSK’s X (formerly Twitter) account.

At 18 years old, Mhatre had emerged as Chennai’s top run-scorer in the 2026 IPL season, amassing two half-centuries at an impressive strike rate of 177.87. Despite being promoted to bat at number three, with Sanju Samson and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad opening the innings, Mhatre had been a consistent contributor to the team’s batting lineup.

CSK’s injury woes have mounted throughout the season. Prior to Mhatre’s setback, the team lost pace bowler Khaleel Ahmed to a Grade 2 right quadriceps injury. Nathan Ellis has been unavailable since before the tournament began due to injury, while Dewald Brevis and MS Dhoni have also missed portions of the season.

With just two wins from their first six matches, Chennai Super Kings currently occupy eighth place in the IPL 2026 points table. Mhatre’s absence removes a key batting option at a critical stage of the campaign, further complicating their bid for a sixth IPL title.

The franchise has not announced any replacement for Mhatre in the squad as of this update. His recovery timeline suggests he will miss the entirety of the remaining league matches and will not be available for potential playoff contention.
