BELMONT, Mich.— South Korea’s Mi Hyang Lee carded an notable 8-under 64 on Thursday, propelling her to the top of the leaderboard at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Lee’s stellar round was highlighted by a remarkable six-hole stretch where she played 6 under par.
Grace Kim of Australia is in second place, just one stroke back. Kim is seeking redemption after losing in a playoff to Lilia Vu last year, a contest that also featured Lexi Thompson, the 2015 champion.
Karis Davidson, also of Australia, Akie Iwai of Japan, and Sofia Garcia of Paraguay are tied for third, two strokes behind Lee. Their scores of 66 come as players prepare for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Texas next week. The tournament plays a crucial role in setting the stage for the major.
Only three of the world’s top 10 golfers are competing at Blythefield Country Club. Haeran Ryu, ranked No. 5, is the highest-ranked player in the field. She posted a 3-under 69 in the afternoon.
Lee, playing in the morning, made a significant move by birdieing Nos. 5-8 and then eagling the 10th. She expressed surprise at reaching the green in two on the par-5 10th.
“I didn’t expect I can hit the green there for my second shot,” Lee said. ”But it was a great line and good hit with the 3-wood and I made the green. It was almost 24 feet, like right-to left-eagle putt. I didn’t expect to make it.”
The 32-year-old Lee, whose last LPGA Tour victory came in 2017, finished her bogey-free round with birdies on Nos. 14 and 17.Her accuracy off the tee proved vital.
“I missed only two fairways,” Lee said. “I think that’s a lot of help to hit the greens a lot, too.”
Kim’s round included an eagle on the 10th and a birdie on the 11th, both achieved by chipping in.
“That was a good start to the back nine,” Kim said. “Just kind of saved pars early and then loosened up as we went on. That was quite nice.” Kim’s role in the tournament is to challenge for the lead.
Iwai, 22, recorded five birdies in a seven-hole stretch. She bounced back from a bogey on 17 with a birdie on the 18th.Her twin sister, Chisato, who won in Mexico in May, shot a 73.
Minjee Lee, along with Caley McGinty, Ruixin Liu, Andrea Lee, Gabriela Ruffels, and Jiwon Jeon, are at 5-under 67. Andrea Lee is the lone U.S. player among the top contenders. Thompson shot a 68, while Vu struggled with a 77. The role of the other players is to compete for the championship.
