MI6 Chief’s Grandfather Allegedly a Nazi Spy
Updated June 27, 2025
London – The appointment of blaise Metreweli as the next head of MI6, Britain’s Secret Intelligence service, is facing unexpected scrutiny.Recent reports allege that her grandfather,Constantine Dobrowolski, served as a Nazi spy during World War II. This revelation casts a shadow over the incoming chief, who is set to become the first woman to lead the agency in its 116-year history.
Metreweli’s background has come under intense examination since her appointment was announced earlier this month. News outlets reported Friday that Dobrowolski, her paternal grandfather, defected from the Soviet Red Army and became a key informant for the Nazis in Chernihiv, Ukraine. The Foreign Office, representing MI6,issued a statement addressing the claims, asserting that Metreweli “neither knew nor met her paternal grandfather.”
According to a Foreign Office spokesperson, “Blaise’s ancestry is characterised by conflict and division and, as is the case for many with eastern European heritage, only partially understood. It is precisely this complex heritage which has contributed to her commitment to prevent conflict and protect the British public from modern threats from today’s antagonistic states, as the next chief of MI6.”
Reports indicate that Dobrowolski was known as “The Butcher” or “Agent No 30” by Wehrmacht commanders. Documents allegedly show he signed letters to Nazi superiors with “Heil hitler” and claimed to have “personally” participated in “the extermination of the Jews.” The archive documents reportedly suggest Dobrowolski looted bodies of Holocaust victims and laughed while watching the sexual assault of female prisoners.
After the war, Dobrowolski’s wife and son fled to Britain. metreweli, born in 1977, joined MI6 in 1999 and currently oversees technology and innovation. She is slated to succeed sir Richard Moore later this year.
Upon her appointment, Metreweli stated she was ”proud and honoured” to be selected to lead the agency. A Cambridge graduate with operational experience in the Middle East and Europe, she has yet to respond to the recent reports concerning her grandfather.
What’s next
The MI6 will likely continue to address concerns about Metreweli’s family history as she prepares to take office, emphasizing her commitment to protecting British interests despite her complex heritage.
