Hollywood icon Michael Douglas has suggested he may be nearing retirement from acting, telling a press conference at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival that he wouldn’t take on another role unless “something special came up.” The 80-year-old actor and producer, celebrated for roles in classics like Wall Street and Fatal Attraction, also voiced concerns about the current political climate in the United States, warning it is “flirting with autocracy.”
A Career Paused, Not Necessarily Ended
Douglas’s last on-screen appearance was as Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ series Franklin, filmed in 2022 and released in 2024. He explained he hasn’t worked since then intentionally, recognizing the need for a break after nearly six decades in the industry.
“I’ve had a very busy career. Now, I have not worked since 2022, purposely, because I realised I had to stop,” he stated. “I’d been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.”
While not explicitly declaring retirement,Douglas emphasized his contentment with taking time off. “I’m very happy with taking the time off. I have no real intentions. But I say I’m not retired, as if something special came up, I’d go back. But otherwise, I’m quite happy. I just like to watch my wife [actor Catherine Zeta-Jones] work.”
He did mention working on a “little independent movie,” attempting to “get a good script out,” but playfully added, “I’m not pursuing work. My golf game is getting better.” this suggests a continued creative interest, but not a pressing need to return to the demanding schedule of a leading actor.
A Health Scare and a Grateful Outlook
Douglas’s decision to step back also stems from a personal health battle. In 2010, he underwent chemotherapy and radiation for stage four throat cancer. Reflecting on this experience at Karlovy vary, he expressed gratitude that he avoided surgery.
“I was fortunate to avoid surgery, which would have meant not being able to talk and removing part of my jaw … that would have been limiting as an actor,” he revealed. This experience clearly shaped his perspective on prioritizing health and well-being.
Concerns Over the Future of US Democracy
Beyond his career, Douglas didn’t shy away from addressing the state of US politics. he expressed deep worry about the direction his country is heading, characterizing it as “flirting with autocracy.”
“I look at it generally as the fact of how precious democracy is, of how vulnerable it is indeed and how it always has to be protected,” he said. He drew a parallel to the Czech Republic’s struggle for freedom, hoping their experience would serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic values.
Douglas lamented the increasing influence of money in politics, stating, “Politics now seem to be for profit.Money has entered democracy as a profit center. People are going into politics now to make money. We maintained an ideal,an idealism in the US,which does not exist now.”
He refrained from delving into specifics, stating, “the news speaks for itself,” but reiterated his personal anxieties.”I myself am worried, I am nervous, and I think it’s all of our duty to look out for ourselves.”
This candid assessment underscores Douglas’s commitment to civic engagement and his concern for the future of democratic principles, adding another layer to the legacy of this celebrated actor and producer.
