According to the Irish Independent, O’Brien had been unwell for several years and was only hours away from being flown to the United States for specialist treatment when she passed away. A representative for the family stated that the families were devastated by her sudden passing and requested privacy while expressing gratitude to the medical staff at Beacon Hospital who cared for her during her final weeks.

A Storied Career in Irish Dance and Meeting the Pope
O’Brien was a renowned professional dancer who began performing at just three years old and finished fourth at the world championships at age 17. She rose to fame performing the lead role of Saoirse in Lord of the Dance and appeared in other major productions including Riverdance, Feet Of Flames, and the Celtic Tiger. She first met Flatley on the set of Riverdance in the 1990s before they married in 2006 in Fermoy, County Cork, and welcomed their son, Michael Saint James, in 2007.
Months prior to her death, O’Brien made her final public appearance on April 29, 2026, traveling to the Vatican with Flatley and their son to meet Pope Leo XIV. Photographs from the occasion showed O’Brien smiling alongside her husband in an all-black outfit while Flatley had his rosary beads blessed by the pontiff. Flatley later called the experience an incredible honour, noting that it was one of the greatest days of his life.
Condolences Pour In From the Entertainment World
Figures from across the entertainment and television industries offered messages of support following the announcement. Rivals actress Victoria Smurfit wrote on social media, No!
Michael am so incredibly sorry to hear this shocking news.
All love to you and your lad.
Irish TV presenter Kathryn Thomas also shared her condolences, writing that it was shocking news to hear about your beautiful Niamh.
Flatley’s sister, Thomasina Griffin, left a comment on the post calling O’Brien the sweetest and kindest sister-in-law anyone could ask for. Throughout their marriage, O’Brien remained a steadfast partner to Flatley, acting as his rock during his own battle with cancer. Flatley recounted last year how her courage in smiling beside his hospital bed during a severe health crisis helped pull him through his pain.

Funeral Arrangements and Memorial Plans Awaited
Funeral details and service arrangements for O’Brien will be announced by the family in due course, according to statements issued by family representatives. While tributes continue to be shared by fans and colleagues across international media outlets, the family has asked for continued privacy to mourn their loss.
