Michael Hussey, a former Australia great, has turned down an offer from the England and Wales Cricket Board to serve as the Test batting coach for the men’s team, instead opting for a part-time consultancy role with Cricket Australia ahead of next year’s Ashes series, as reported by The Guardian, Sportstar, and Hindustan Times.

According to Hindustan Times, Hussey held discussions last month with England’s newly appointed Test head coach Stephen Fleming regarding a position in the backroom staff. The pair share a long-standing professional relationship from the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, where they worked together across Hussey’s spells as both a player and a batting coach. Despite that 18-year connection, Fleming was unable to persuade the 51-year-old to commit to a full-time role that would require extensive travel and time away from home.

Flexibility and Franchise Commitments Drive Decision

According to Hindustan Times, Hussey opted for Cricket Australia’s part-time consultancy offer primarily because the role provides the flexibility needed to manage his existing professional commitments. Those duties include coaching assignments in franchise leagues—such as his stint as head coach of Welsh Fire in The Hundred—alongside commentary and punditry work with Fox Sports in Australia.

Sportstar noted that Hussey brings prior experience within the England setup, having previously served on a part-time consultant contract during the team’s triumphant 2022 T20 World Cup campaign. However, a permanent position with the senior Test squad demanded a level of travel that conflicted with his broader schedule.

England’s Coaching Options and Ashes Preparations

According to Hindustan Times, England face a packed international calendar featuring upcoming tours of South Africa, Bangladesh, and Australia ahead of a home Ashes series next summer. Following Hussey’s rejection, the England and Wales Cricket Board must evaluate alternative candidates for the batting-coach position.

Hindustan Times reported that the ECB could choose to retain Marcus Trescothick on a permanent basis. Trescothick has been filling the batting coach role on a caretaker basis during England’s ongoing Test series against Pakistan, where the team holds a 2-0 lead. Neither Cricket Australia nor the ECB has publicly confirmed Hussey’s decision, with both governing bodies declining to comment when approached by reporters.
