Northwell Health Names D’Angelo CEO ‌as Dowling Steps Down

Michael J. Dowling will step down⁣ as president and CEO of Northwell Health, the‌ largest healthcare provider⁣ and private ⁤employer in New ⁣York, on Oct. 1. He will⁤ transition to​ the role of CEO emeritus,the health ‍system announced.

Dowling’s tenure of more than 23 years saw Northwell Health ⁣transform ​from a network of ⁤Long Island hospitals into ​one of ​the nation’s ten largest‍ health‌ systems, known‍ for⁢ clinical, academic ‍and research excellence.Under Dowling, Northwell became New York State’s‍ first integrated health⁤ system​ in‍ 1992 and now includes ⁢28 hospitals across New York and Connecticut.

Northwell ‍Health’s Board of ⁤Trustees appointed ⁣Dr. John D’Angelo as the new ⁢president and CEO, effective in October. D’Angelo,⁣ currently executive vice president of⁣ the health system’s central region, was selected after a nationwide ⁣search. He ⁣began his career ⁢at Northwell more than‌ 25 years ago ⁣as an emergency medicine physician⁢ at Glen Cove Hospital before ​moving into leadership ‌roles.

As ‍president and CEO, Dowling championed investments in research, leading to‌ the growth of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research ⁣and⁢ positioning Northwell at⁣ the forefront of bioelectronic medicine. The transition​ marks a new chapter for the‌ health system,ensuring continued focus on healthcare provider excellence and medical research.
