the Unsung Heroine of Bible Translation
A young Bible translation intern was asked in the early 2010s, “Do you want to meet the Michael Jordan of Bible translation?” He soon discovered the woman in question was Dr. Katharine Barnwell, a missionary largely unknown in Western evangelical circles, but whose work has profoundly impacted global Christianity.
Jordan Monson, the intern, recalled attending a conference when a friend introduced him to Barnwell, an English woman in her 70s with a noticeable limp. He described a scene where seasoned leaders paused thier conversations and offered reverence as Barnwell moved through the room.
Barnwell intentionally remained outside the spotlight, focusing rather on making Scripture accessible to those in West Africa who had never heard the Gospel. Monson believes her influence far surpasses that of even well-known figures like Billy Graham.
She sort of slipped away from the limelight, or she was never noticed,” Monson said. “But if you look at the number of people in the world who have become Christians, largely because of her work, there is a very real claim to her having more than 100 times the influence of Billy Graham. It’s just incredible.
Unlike many who seek notoriety, Barnwell prioritized the work itself. Her legacy isn’t measured in public acclaim, but in the countless lives touched by her dedication to translation.
