Michael Mann Honored at France’s Lumière Festival
Michael Mann to Receive Prestigious Lumière Award in Lyon
Legendary filmmaker Michael Mann, the visionary behind cinematic masterpieces like Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, and collateral, is set to be honored wiht the prestigious Lumière Award at the upcoming Lumière Festival in Lyon, France. The festival, celebrating its 17th edition from October 11-19, will recognize Mann’s profound and lasting impact on cinema, hailing him as a major artist “straight out of Hollywood mythology.”
The Institut Lumière, in a statement, lauded Mann’s distinctive filmmaking style, noting that it is “both rooted in a strong Hollywood tradition and embodies a personal and innovative cinema through his choice of subjects, his approach to directing, storytelling, and aesthetics.” They further emphasized his independent spirit, stating, “With true independence - and at times, a certain solitude – he is one of the most significant filmmakers in the history of cinema.”
Mann joins an illustrious roster of Hollywood luminaries who have previously received the Lumière honor. Past recipients include acclaimed directors such as Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Quentin tarantino, and Tim Burton, and also celebrated actresses Jane Fonda and Isabelle Huppert, who was last year’s honoree.
This will not be mann’s first encounter with the Lyon festival. He previously attended in 2017 for a memorable screening of his iconic crime drama Heat, introduced by fellow director Guillermo del Toro. Mann is expected to return in person to accept the award on October 17.
Beyond his celebrated feature films,mann’s influence extends to the small screen. He was a pivotal creative force behind the 1980s television phenomenon Miami Vice, executive producing all five seasons. He later revisited the gritty world of Crockett and Tubbs with the 2006 feature film adaptation, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. More recently, Mann returned to television, executive producing and directing the pilot episode of the critically acclaimed HBO Max series Tokyo Vice.
his latest directorial effort, ferrari, starring Adam Driver as the legendary Enzo Ferrari, garnered significant attention. Currently, Mann is in pre-production for the highly anticipated sequel to Heat, a project fueled by the success of his novel adaptation, Heat 2, which became a New York Times best-seller.
