Michael Matthews will make his racing return at the Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France on Sunday, just 11 weeks after being sidelined with a pulmonary embolism. The Jayco-alula rider was forced to stop all racing and riding in mid-June after signs of the condition were discovered during a training camp at altitude.
The team has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of Matthews’ condition and recovery, but have now deemed him fit to compete again.
“I’m really looking forward to pinning a number on again and getting out there with my teammates. These last few months have been tough, but I’m ready and excited to get back racing again,” Matthews said in a team press release.
He is particularly motivated to return at the Bretagne Classic, a race he won in 2020. “It is also special to be returning to a race that I have good memories of after my win back in 2020. I’ve also had some other good results here in my career and it’s a race that suits me well.”
Matthews missed the entire summer of racing, including the Tour de France, due to the health issue. He will be joined by his Jayco-alula teammates at the Bretagne Classic – Ouest-France, a race known for its unpredictable nature.
