‍ Updated June 07,2025

The contemporary Christian Music group Newsboys have responded to allegations ‍against their former lead singer,Michael Tait, who left⁢ the band⁤ in January. The allegations involve sexual assault and drug use, reportedly dating back to 2004.

The Roys report published the results of a two-and-a-half-year inquiry, claiming to have spoken with over 50 sources. Three individuals allege Tait groomed and sexually assaulted them while touring or at his home between 2004 and 2014.The report also includes claims of drug use by Tait.

The current Newsboys lineup—Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, and Adam Agee—addressed the Michael Tait allegations in an Instagram post. They ‍wrote, “Last night our ⁤hearts were⁢ shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate⁢ sexual actions by ‍our former lead singer, Michael Tait. While Michael has not addressed‍ these allegations, we⁢ are devastated by even the implications.”

“first and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories,” the band’s ⁤message continued. “If you⁣ are a victim, we urge you to come forward. We absolutely do⁢ not condone any ⁢form of sexual assault. The four of us are husbands and fathers. Between the four of us, we have fourteen children. Our wives and children have made many sacrifices while we have dedicated our lives to playing music together that glorifies god. We are horrified,⁣ heartbroken and angry at this report ‍and in many ways, we feel as‍ if we and our families have ⁢been deceived for the past fifteen years.”

Tait has yet to issue a public response.A Newsboys representative did not offer further comment ‍beyond the band’s statement.

Tait stepped down from Newsboys shortly before the second leg ⁤of their Worldwide Revival Nights Tour. He stated at the ⁢time that⁣ his decision came after “prayer and fasting.” Tait became the Newsboys’ lead singer in 2009, succeeding Peter Furler.

Before joining Newsboys, Tait co-founded the Christian group DC Talk (1988-2001) with TobyMac and Kevin Max. DC Talk achieved⁢ success with songs like “Jesus Freak” and “Between You and Me.” Their 1995 album, Jesus Freak, reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy.
