The long-awaited Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is now playing in theaters nationwide, with early box office numbers indicating a successful theatrical run, prompting questions about when the film will be available for home viewing.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film traces Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his evolution as a visionary artist driven to become the world’s biggest entertainer. The movie’s third act, which was originally intended to address the 1993 child sex abuse allegations involving Jordan Chandler, was removed during post-production after the Jackson estate determined it could not legally depict Chandler or his family. Extensive reshoots followed, reportedly costing between $40 million and $50 million according to the New York Times.
Based on industry trends, “Michael” is expected to become available for digital rental and purchase approximately 30 to 45 days after its theatrical run concludes. Given its global theatrical release date of April 24, 2026, this places the digital release window between late May and June 2026.
Lionsgate, the film’s distributor, has a multi-year agreement with Amazon Prime Video, which could lead to “Michael” being added to the platform’s content library. However, the film will first arrive on video-on-demand services before moving to streaming platforms, which typically occurs a few months after the digital release.
Regarding streaming distribution, “Michael” will have two eventual homes in the United States. STARZ will acquire the film first after it leaves theaters, where it will remain for a period before transitioning to Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service.
While the film has generated significant interest among fans of the pop icon, it has also faced scrutiny. The Jackson estate has invested heavily in the production, creating financial pressure for strong box office performance to avoid potential losses. Despite controversies surrounding the subject matter, Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle has received praise from early viewers and critics.
