Michelle Yeoh’s Journey: Overcoming Feelings of Failure and Embracing Life Without Children
Michelle Yeoh recently shared her feelings about infertility. She expressed that she “felt like a failure” for not having children. During a conversation on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, she described the painful experience of dealing with infertility each month.
Yeoh stated, “I always wanted to have children,” but clarified that the choice to have kids should be personal. She highlighted how infertility impacted her first marriage to Sir Dickson Poon. They married in 1988 but divorced in 1992. Yeoh noted that their marriage was built on the expectation of having children.
She acknowledged the heartbreak of their separation but believed it was necessary. Yeoh emphasized the importance of honest conversations between partners about their future family plans. She reflected, “You have to be fair sometimes… there will be a lot of hurt.”
Poon has five children, and Yeoh is the godmother to his eldest. Last year, she married Jean Todt and recently welcomed a grandchild through her stepson. Yeoh, now 62, expressed gratitude for having a grandchild in her life, stating, “You feel you’re still very, very blessed.”
She concluded that at some point, one must stop self-blame. Yeoh acknowledged, “There are certain things in your body that don’t function in a certain way.” She encouraged letting go of guilt and moving forward.
