Michigan Basketball: No. 1 Ranking & Purdue Matchup | 2024 Season

Michigan’s Historic Season Faces Purdue Test in Top-10 Clash

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – , marks a significant matchup in college basketball as the No. 1 University of Michigan Wolverines (24-1) travel to Mackey Arena to face the No. 7 Purdue Boilermakers (21-4). Michigan is enjoying its best start in program history and secured the top ranking in the Associated Press poll for the first time since 2013.

The game presents a formidable challenge for Purdue, which has historically struggled against top-ranked opponents. According to Purdue’s media guide, the Boilermakers hold a 3-20 record against No. 1 teams. Despite this historical disadvantage, Purdue is currently playing strong basketball, coming off back-to-back road wins against Nebraska and Iowa.

Michigan’s ascent to the No. 1 spot is fueled by a dominant performance, particularly during their run at the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas. The Wolverines secured three wins over potential NCAA tournament teams – San Diego State, Auburn, and Gonzaga – by a combined 110 points. This performance has positioned them as a national title favorite.

The Wolverines’ success is attributed to a well-rounded team, boasting a strong defense and depth. They are the first team in the AP Poll era (since 1948-49) to achieve consecutive 30-point victories against ranked opponents, a feat highlighted by ESPN Insights.

Purdue, while historically unsuccessful against No. 1 teams, has managed to secure victories against top-ranked opponents on a few occasions. Two of those wins came against Arizona, in Indianapolis in 2000 and again in 2023. The Boilermakers have only defeated a No. 1 team at Mackey Arena once, a 52-50 victory over Michigan State during the 1978-79 season.

The last time Purdue hosted the nation’s top-ranked team was in 2005, resulting in a 68-59 loss to Illinois. Michigan enters Tuesday’s game with a 24-1 record, boasting a 14-1 record in Big Ten play and currently leading the conference standings. Their only loss this season came on January 10th, a 91-88 defeat against Wisconsin.

The series history between Michigan and Purdue favors the Wolverines, with a 77-94 overall record. However, Purdue has won the last two meetings between the teams. At Mackey Arena, Michigan holds a 26-57 record, but has found success more recently, with a 5-6 record in their last eleven visits.

This matchup is poised to be a key contest in the Big Ten conference race, with both teams vying for positioning as the season progresses. Michigan’s ability to maintain its dominant form on the road will be a critical factor, while Purdue will look to leverage its home-court advantage and potentially add another upset victory to its resume.

The game represents the 24th time Purdue has faced the No. 1 team in the country, a challenge the Boilermakers have historically found difficult to overcome.
