Michigan Men’s gymnastics Unveils Depth and Talent in Exhibition Meet
Ann Arbor, MI - Fresh off back-to-back second-place finishes at the NCAA Championships, the Michigan men’s gymnastics team is hungry for gold. With a roster brimming with talent,including three Olympians,the Wolverines are poised to make a serious run at the national title in 2025.
“It makes us work even harder,” said head coach Yuan Xiao. “Everyone knows our goals. We’re not going to change our goals until we win a national championship.”
Saturday’s exhibition meet at cliff Keen Arena offered a glimpse into the team’s potential. The intrasquad scrimmage, pitting assistant coaches Juha Tanskanan’s Blue team against Jordan Gaarenstroom’s Maize team, showcased the Wolverines’ impressive depth and a promising blend of veteran leadership and exciting newcomers.
Returning Olympians Lais Najjar, Paul Juda, and Fred Richard, who helped lead the U.S. to a bronze medal in Paris, bring invaluable experience and a winning mentality to the team.
“Those guys have been out there,” junior Landen Blixt said. ”You can take their experience and their knowledge and apply it to your own gymnastics and not even gymnastics, just being a great person.”
The meet kicked off on floor exercise, where Blixt, a two-time All-American and reigning Big Ten champion on the apparatus, delivered a standout performance, scoring a 13.400.
The Wolverines’ youth shined brightly on pommel horse. Freshman Aaronson Mansberger led all competitors with a 13.300, a score that exceeded the next highest execution total by nearly a full point.
“I’m so happy every freshman is competing so well,” Xiao said. “That’s new blood for our team. I believe this team is pretty balanced, and I’m looking forward to seeing the big time for our freshmen.”
Blixt continued his strong showing on vault, posting the highest score with a 14.400.Freshman Solen Chiodi, who brings impressive credentials from the national development program, finished third with a 13.950,drawing excited cheers from his teammates.
“We have accountability partners on the team … and mine’s Solen Chiodi,” Blixt said.”I’m very proud of him, and I can’t wait. He’s going to do amazing things in the future.”
While the meet was shortened, with high bar and still rings not competed, the parallel bars showcased the Wolverines’ depth and experience. Senior Logan McKeown scored highest with a 13.900, followed by Richard, the reigning NCAA parallel bars champion.
the Blue team emerged victorious, 194.300 to 191.100. Blixt, competing for the Maize team, was the all-around winner with a total score of 54.350.
The exhibition meet served as a powerful reminder of the Wolverines’ championship aspirations. With a potent mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, Michigan is primed to make a serious run at the national title in 2025.
