Michigan Men’s Tennis: Young and Kittay Set for NCAA Fall Championships

Event Structure:

  • The NCAA has moved the championships to the fall season. This is part of a two-year pilot program.
  • Matches will follow best-of-three sets, using no-ad scoring. A seven-point tiebreaker will be played at six-games-all.
  • In doubles, a 10-point matchbreaker will replace a third set.

Performance Highlights:

  • Gavin Young qualified for the singles championship by reaching the semifinals at the ITA Sectionals. He will compete against No. 1 seed Sebastian Gorzny (Texas) on Nov. 19. Their previous match ended with Gorzny winning.
  • Young has qualified for the NCAA Singles three times, with a second-round finish in 2023. His record this season is 8-3.
  • Young’s Achievements:

    • Ranked No. 7 in the preseason ITA rankings.
    • 75-38 all-time singles record.
    • All-American in doubles (2023), with four NCAA Doubles Championship qualifications with different partners.
  • Benjamin Kittay qualified for the doubles championship in October. He and Young won the ITA Midwest Regional title. They will face Notre Dame’s Peter Nad/Sebastian Dominko on Nov. 20.
  • Kittay has competed in the NCAA doubles championship before. He is a transfer from North Carolina.
  • Kittay and Young are 6-1 this season and ranked No. 17 in the preseason rankings.

Best Wins:

  • Young’s best singles victory was against No. 41 Issac Becroft (Oklahoma State).
  • Kittay and Young achieved a notable win against No. 2 ranked Ratiu/Blaydes of Georgia.

This event marks an important opportunity for both players as they compete on a larger stage.
