The University of Michigan men’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA national championship game on April 4, 2026, after defeating Arizona 91-73 in the Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The victory marks the first time the Wolverines have reached the tournament title game since 2018. Michigan, the Midwest Region top seed and No. 3-ranked team, will face UConn in the championship game on Monday, April 7, 2026.

Michigan dominated the game from the start, leading Arizona by 16 points at halftime. The Wolverines’ offense reached the 90-point plateau for the fifth time in five tournament games, with four of those wins decided by 18 points or more.

Game Performance and Key Statistics

Aday Mara led the scoring for Michigan with 26 points, adding nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. This marked Mara’s third game of the season with 20 or more points.

Other significant contributors included Trey McKenney, who scored 16 points including four three-pointers, and Elliot Cadeau, who recorded 13 points and 10 assists to earn his third double-double of the season.

Morez Johnson Jr. Added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. The team shot 57.1 percent from the field for the game, increasing to 63.6 percent during the second half.

Michigan’s early momentum was established by a 10-1 lead and a critical dunk by Roddy Gayle Jr. With 6:22 remaining in the first half, which halted a 9-0 run by Arizona and sparked a 7-0 run for the Wolverines.

Injury to Yaxel Lendeborg

The game was marked by an injury scare involving Associated Press first-team All-American Yaxel Lendeborg. After picking up two fouls early in the game, Lendeborg suffered a sprained left ankle and an MCL sprain in his knee while driving to the lane and landing on the foot of Arizona’s Motiejus Krivas.

Lendeborg was forced to leave the game and spend the remainder of the first half in the locker room. He eventually returned to the court, contributing 11 points on three three-point attempts in 12 minutes of play.

Following the game, Lendeborg stated that the only reason he would not play in the national championship game on Monday is if he were unable to walk.

Historical Context and Matchup Details

Michigan’s performance in the tournament has been historically dominant. The Wolverines became the first team since the 1967-68 UCLA team to lead by 15 or more points at halftime in both the Elite Eight and the Final Four.

Arizona entered the Final Four as the West’s top seed and was ranked No. 2 in the nation. Despite their ranking, Arizona struggled against Michigan’s defense, which forced nine turnovers in the first half alone.

Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd described Michigan’s current form as having the kryptonite and noted that figuring out how to counter the Wolverines would be a focus for the upcoming offseason.

The event also featured a reunion of Michigan’s Fab Five, who were seen on the sidelines during the first half and participated in an alternative broadcast of the showdown.
