The University of Michigan Wolverines won the 2026 NCAA men’s basketball national championship on April 6, 2026, defeating the UConn Huskies 69-63 in Indianapolis. This victory marks Michigan’s second national title in program history and their first since 1989.

The win also ended a 25-year title drought for the Big Ten conference, as Michigan State’s 2000 championship was the last time a team from the conference won the men’s basketball title.

Aday Mara, a Spanish player for the Wolverines, became the first Spaniard to win the NCAA championship. Mara contributed eight points and four rebounds during the final game and was noted for his fundamental role in the team’s defense.

Game Performance and Key Statistics

Michigan’s victory was characterized by physical play and dominance inside the paint. The Wolverines outscored the Huskies 36 to 22 in the paint and attempted 28 free throws, while Connecticut attempted 16.

Junior guard Elliot Cadeau led the team with 19 points and was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Across the final two rounds of the tournament, Cadeau averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds.

Other significant contributors included senior forward Yaxel Lendeborg, who scored 13 points, and sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr., who added 12 points. Freshman sixth man Trey McKenney also played a critical role, hitting a step-back three-pointer with 1:50 remaining in the game to extend the lead to nine points and later securing the lead with two free throws.

Tournament Path and Dominance

Michigan entered the championship game following a dominant tournament run. Prior to the final, the Wolverines won each of their first five games by double digits, maintaining an average margin of victory of 21.6 points.

Tournament Path and Dominance

The team set a tournament record by scoring at least 90 points in each of their first five NCAA tournament games. In their final game before the championship, Michigan defeated Arizona 91-73.

Head coach Dusty May reflected on the achievement during the trophy presentation, stating: It still doesn’t feel real. These guys have done it all year.

UConn’s Final Stand

The UConn Huskies entered the game seeking their third national championship in four seasons. Despite a disappointing offensive showing, the Huskies attempted a late comeback in the final minute, cutting the deficit to four points.

A potential comeback was stalled when a shot by Solo Ball did not go in. Although Solo Ball later hit a banked-in three-pointer with less than a minute remaining to bring the score within four, the Huskies failed to close the gap. Roddy Gayle missed two free throws, and Alex Karaban missed a three-pointer with less than 20 seconds remaining that would have made the game a one-possession affair.

Michigan maintained control for the majority of the matchup, leading for 75% of the game.

Following the victory, Elliot Cadeau emphasized the team’s focus on collective success over individual performance, stating: Nobody cared about stats the entire season, nobody cared about anything but winning.
