Michigan Gymnastics Opens Season with exhibition Win
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan women’s gymnastics team kicked off its 2024 season with a decisive victory in its annual exhibition meet against Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan on Friday (Dec. 6) at Crisler Center. The Wolverines dominated the competition, posting a final score of 195.600, while western Michigan finished second with 194.175 and eastern Michigan rounded out the field with 191.700.Graduate student Carly Bauman led the charge for Michigan, capturing both the balance beam and uneven bars titles with remarkable scores of 9.900 and 9.850, respectively. Freshmen Sophia Diaz and Jahzara Ranger shared the vault title,each earning a 9.875. Kayli Boozer delivered a standout performance on floor exercise,securing the title with a 9.900.”It was a great start to the season,” said head coach Bev Plocki.”We saw some strong performances from both our veterans and newcomers. There’s definitely room for advancement, but I’m excited about the potential of this team.”
The Wolverines started strong on vault, with Peyton Davis leading off with a solid 9.775. Ranger and Diaz followed with matching 9.875s, setting the tone for Michigan’s dominant performance.
Bauman continued Michigan’s momentum on uneven bars, posting a team-high 9.850. Ranger added a strong 9.750, helping Michigan maintain its lead heading into the third rotation.
Boozer shone on beam, delivering a steady leadoff routine with a 9.825. Bauman capped off the rotation with a stunning 9.900, further extending Michigan’s advantage.
Boozer’s impressive performance continued on floor exercise, where she secured the title with a 9.900. Reyna Guggino followed closely behind with a 9.875, while Sophie Parenti tied for fourth with a 9.825.
The Wolverines will now turn their attention to the regular season, which begins on Sunday, Jan. 5 with a meet against the University of Denver in Colorado.
