Microplastics, increasingly recognized as pervasive environmental pollutants, are now being detected within human tissues, raising concerns about potential health impacts. A recent study has revealed the presence of these microscopic plastic particles in a significant proportion of prostate cancer tumors, prompting further investigation into a possible link between plastic exposure and the development of the disease.

The research, presented on February 23, 2026 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, analyzed tissue samples from February 23, 2026 10 men undergoing prostate removal surgery. Researchers at NYU Langone Health discovered microplastics in 90% of the tumor samples and 70% of adjacent non-cancerous prostate tissue. Notably, the concentration of microplastics within the cancerous tissue was, on average, 2.5 times higher than in the healthy tissue – approximately 40 micrograms of plastic per gram of tissue compared to 16 micrograms per gram.

“Our pilot study provides important evidence that microplastic exposure may be a risk factor for prostate cancer,” stated Dr. Stacy Loeb, MD, a professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the study’s lead author. While acknowledging that direct evidence linking microplastics to prostate cancer remains limited, Dr. Loeb emphasized the significance of these findings as a starting point for further research.

The ubiquity of plastics in modern life makes studying their impact challenging. Microplastics originate from the breakdown of larger plastic items – from food packaging and cosmetics to synthetic textiles – through processes like weathering, heat, and chemical treatment. Exposure occurs through multiple pathways: ingestion via contaminated food and water, inhalation from airborne particles, and absorption through the skin. Previous studies have identified microplastics in nearly every human organ, including the placenta and various body fluids.

The study’s findings raise questions about the mechanisms by which microplastics might contribute to cancer development. Dr. Vittorio Albergamo, lead author of the research paper, suggested that microplastic particles could trigger an excessive immune response within tissues, potentially leading to cellular damage and, over time, the formation of cancerous cells. This hypothesis requires further investigation to understand the specific biological processes involved.

It’s important to note that establishing a definitive cause-and-effect relationship between microplastic exposure and prostate cancer is complex. As Dr. Michael Eisenberg, a urology professor at Stanford University School of Medicine who was not involved in the study, pointed out, the research provides “many signals about the connection between microplastics and health problems” but does not yet prove causation. Further studies with larger cohorts and more detailed analyses are needed to confirm these initial observations.

The concern surrounding microplastics extends beyond prostate cancer. Research is ongoing to explore potential links between microplastic exposure and other health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and reproductive issues. A 2024 study from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, for example, suggested a possible association between microplastics and colon and lung cancer, as well as adverse effects on sperm quality, testicular health, and the function of the intestines, and lungs.

Microplastics are pervasive in everyday life, originating from sources such as plastic food bags, wrappers, tea bags, and wet tissues. They enter the human body through drinking water, air, and direct contact, accumulating within tissues over time. The potential for long-term health consequences from this continuous exposure is a growing area of concern for researchers and public health officials.

While the precise risks associated with microplastic exposure are still being investigated, the emerging evidence underscores the need for stricter regulation of plastic production and waste management. Reducing plastic consumption, improving recycling infrastructure, and developing biodegradable alternatives are crucial steps in mitigating the environmental and potential health impacts of these ubiquitous pollutants. The current research serves as a critical reminder of the interconnectedness between environmental health and human well-being, and the importance of continued investigation into the long-term effects of plastic pollution.
