Microsoft is retiring Outlook Lite for Android, with the application officially losing all mailbox access on May 25, 2026. The company is directing users to transition to the full Outlook mobile app, which Microsoft intends to serve as its single, unified mobile email experience across platforms.

The announcement was detailed in a Microsoft 365 MC1276508 support message, which was first spotted by Neowin. According to the support documentation, the Outlook Lite app will stop working almost entirely after the May 25, 2026, deadline. While users may still be able to launch the application, it will no longer provide access to mailboxes.

Users who rely on the Lite version for email access will find that their existing emails remain, but they will require the installation of the main Outlook app to view them.

Technical Specifications of Outlook Lite

Outlook Lite was developed as a lightweight client specifically for low-end devices and slower network environments. It was engineered to operate on smartphones with 1GB of RAM or less and was optimized for 2G and 3G network connections.

Technical Specifications of Outlook Lite

One of the primary advantages of the Lite version was its minimal system footprint, requiring only 5MB of storage space. However, this reduced size meant the app lacked several features found in the full version of Outlook.

Consolidation of Mobile Strategy

The retirement of the Lite app is part of a broader consolidation of Microsoft’s mobile strategy. This process began in September 2025, when Microsoft first announced its intentions to start the retirement of Outlook Lite.

Microsoft has stated that the main Outlook app has improved sufficiently to replace the Lite version. By moving all users to a single application, the company aims to provide a consistent feature set across its mobile user base.

Despite these claims, the transition has raised concerns for users who depended on the Lite app’s faster performance and smaller resource requirements. Notice concerns that the full application may be too demanding for the low-spec hardware the Lite version was designed to support.

This move follows a pattern of application reductions at the company. As reported by XDA, Microsoft has been on a culling spree with its mobile offerings, including the removal of support for another mobile app in January 2026.

Users currently employing Outlook Lite on Android have approximately six weeks to configure an alternative email client or migrate to the full Outlook application before the May 25, 2026, cut-off date.
