An AI agent answers questions, works, and acts autonomously, but eventually returns to the user for permission and instructions. It works with humans rather than by itself.
Microsoft CEO satya Nadella shared his vision for the future of artificial intelligence, emphasizing its role in augmenting human capabilities rather than replacing them. speaking in Seoul, Nadella addressed the question of how to prepare for an AI-driven future, asserting that while AI is becoming increasingly smart, the ultimate decisions remain with humanity.

Nadella, who took the helm as Microsoft’s third CEO in 2014, has been credited with transforming the company into an AI-first organization. Under his leadership, Microsoft shifted its focus to cloud services and made strategic investments in areas like social media, GitHub, and OpenAI. This change has seen Microsoft’s corporate value increase from $300 billion in 2014 to nearly $3 trillion.
Nadella, originally from India, joined Microsoft in 1992 after earning a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin. During his visit to Korea, Nadella expressed interest in collaborating with Korean companies, meeting with executives from LG Electronics and KT to explore potential partnerships.
Collaboration and Innovation in the AI Ecosystem
Regarding Microsoft’s development of its own AI chips, Nadella highlighted the importance of Korean semiconductor companies like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
The Korean semiconductor industry is crucial not only to Microsoft but also to the world. In the AI era, where the cost of infrastructure increases, ‘performance cost and power efficiency’ is important. Simply put, ‘how well you can achieve per watt’ is a new criterion. Korea’s technology, especially in memory semiconductors, is already at the world’s highest level, and I think these technologies are key to boosting AI performance in the future.
He also confirmed ongoing projects with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix related to Microsoft’s core technology development.
Discussing collaborations with KT and LG, Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to joint innovation.
KT is creating a reliable cloud environment that can be used in Korea’s regulatory environment. KT adds brand trust and market understanding that has accumulated in Korea. Cooperation with LG is also vrey interesting. We are developing a robot system using our AI technology, which combines its own technology to create a new type ‘home hub’ product. It is also aimed at the global market as well as the United States. Beyond simple technology application, the process of designing the market together and expanding global opportunities is the way Microsoft is now important.
LG Electronics CEO Cho Ju-wan also noted discussions with Nadella regarding potential collaboration on AI agents, AI data centers, and the Indian market. According to Cho,LG is considering providing cooling solutions to Microsoft data centers, and exploring collaboration with LG affiliates like LG Energy Solution and LG CNS.
AI’s Impact on Everyday Life and Economic Growth
Nadella addressed the challenge of applying AI technology to everyday life, particularly in the Korean market.
Mobile and cloud technology, which had been a big innovation before AI, was inherently focused on consuming something. Most people have focused on seeing more content, using the service, and receiving data. AI,however,is a technology that people ‘make something’ directly. So, in this age, I think it’s competitive to see who is using it faster than who made the best AI.
He stressed the importance of AI driving real economic growth and benefiting everyone.
It is focusing on whether AI can produce real economic growth. For example, in advanced countries, can you use AI to double the country’s economic productivity to three times? And can everyone benefit? That is the question we are asking ourselves. There is a limit to developing only technology. If AI doesn’t actually affect education, medical, start-ups, and public services, it will just end with technology. We do not want it. The important thing is that the technology is used in the direction of benefit for everyone. Our goal is to create a structure in which the whole society grows through AI and everyone benefits.
Nadella described Microsoft’s Copilot as a new user interface, envisioning it as an interactive operating system connecting AI and people.
The Future of Devices and AI Innovation
Nadella also discussed the potential for AI to transform devices, perhaps replacing or fundamentally changing the smartphone.
Multimodal input (text, voice, image, etc.),memory, context, reasoning and planning functions are added to AI,and the way that humans use the device itself is completely different. This means that the entire device experience is changing, not just a change in function. I think that the form of the device (form factor) will be changed naturally. It is indeed more critically important that AI creates a new device experience than AI replaces smartphones. Smartphones are still used, but it’s likely that a completely new type device will come out. The key is that AI will be designed again the way we use the device in the future.
During an ‘Innovation Campus Tour’ at Microsoft headquarters, Nadella addressed the emergence of Chinese AI models like Deepseek.
Deepseek is actually a model derived based on the inference model O1 of Open AI. However, it is meaningful to show it a lot by revealing it as an open source. The biggest lesson that you can learn from the Deepseek crisis is, ‘Don’t think that the last innovation is over.’ In terms of model structure or efficiency, there will be more breakthroughs in the future.
he cautioned against complacency, suggesting that further breakthroughs in AI are likely.
I think that a large-scale innovation that can overturn the entire AI version can come again.
