Microsoft is building a new datacenter campus in Pecos, Texas, adding approximately 2 gigawatts (GW) of global capacity to support AI and cloud services. According to an announcement from The Official Microsoft Blog, the multibillion-dollar investment will take five to seven years to complete and is intended to meet sustained customer demand from startups, governments, and healthcare providers.
The project is expected to support more than 6,000 construction jobs at its peak build-out and create hundreds of permanent operational roles in West Texas. Reeves County Judge Leo Hung stated that the investment reinforces Pecos as a location where forward-looking companies can grow.
Dedicated Energy Infrastructure and Grid Impact
To avoid straining local energy resources, Microsoft is funding its own power generation and supporting infrastructure. The campus will launch with a co-located natural gas power facility operating “behind the meter,” meaning it serves the campus independently of the public grid. According to the company, this arrangement ensures that the new capacity does not draw from the current public grid at launch.
The power plant will use Selective Catalytic Reduction systems to lower nitrogen oxide emissions. Microsoft plans to eventually connect this facility and the datacenter to the broader regional energy system in coordination with local authorities. This expansion adds to the 4.7 GW of renewable electricity the company has already contracted for its Texas operations.
Water Stewardship and Cooling Systems
The Pecos facility will utilize closed loop cooling systems to minimize water consumption. Microsoft claims this design requires only an initial charge of the cooling system at the start of operations, with no additional water needed during steady-state operation. The company stated that the total lifecycle water use for this datacenter will be a fraction of what a typical fast-food restaurant consumes annually.
To further reduce pressure on community resources, the company plans to use nonpotable water where possible. This follows a pattern of water stewardship in the state; Microsoft previously helped fund the protection of more than 1,500 acres in the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone near San Antonio to support its goal of being water positive by 2030.
Regional Economic and Workforce Development
Microsoft is applying a workforce model in Pecos based on its operations in San Antonio. In that region, the company’s Datacenter Academy invested $545,000 to prepare more than 450 students for careers in the industry. Additionally, the company noted that statewide programs like TechSpark have engaged 20,000 Texans in digital skilling and helped create over 1,100 jobs.
The company’s broader community investment in Texas reached $11 million in cash and $103.3 million in donated software and cloud technology for more than 10,000 nonprofits in fiscal year 2024. Microsoft employees also contributed over 42,000 volunteer hours during that period.

The Pecos campus is designed to provide predictable and resilient capacity for the next generation of advanced compute. Noelle Walsh, who leads the organization powering the Microsoft Cloud, oversees the physical infrastructure growth required to maintain availability and security as AI adoption scales across different industries.
By combining large-scale capacity with onsite energy supply, Microsoft aims to bring new infrastructure online at the pace required by its customers while maintaining operational reliability. The company stated that this investment reflects the future trajectory of AI, where reliable infrastructure at scale is essential for innovation.
