Microsoft is shutting down Outlook Lite for Android users, with the application scheduled to stop functioning entirely on May 25, 2026. According to reporting from Forbes on April 13, 2026, the app will cease operations in six weeks.

While the application will not automatically delete from devices after the May 25 deadline, it will stop working completely, rendering it unusable for those who have not transitioned to an alternative email client.

The Role of Outlook Lite

Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was developed as a simplified, lightweight alternative to the standard Outlook email application. It was specifically designed to provide quick access to email services without causing significant battery drain on Android devices.

The app previously saw significant adoption, with Microsoft celebrating over 10 million downloads in the year following its launch.

Reasoning for Retirement

Microsoft has stated that the decision to retire the Lite version is part of a strategic shift to consolidate its Android offerings. The company intends to focus its resources on the primary Outlook Mobile app.

Reasoning for Retirement

The Outlook Lite app is being retired so we can focus our investments on the Outlook Mobile app, our flagship Android experience, which provides better functionality and user experience. We recommend transitioning to the Outlook Mobile app, where ongoing development and support will continue

Microsoft

This shutdown follows a phased deprecation process. PCMag reported on September 12, 2025, that the app was being deprecated by October 6, 2025, though it was noted that the app would continue to function for a limited time before full retirement.

As part of this wind-down, the application has already been removed from the Google Play Store in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Broader Software Consolidation

The retirement of Outlook Lite is part of a broader trend of Microsoft reducing its portfolio of smaller services. Other tools that have been shut down include the Lens application and the Editor add-on for the Edge and Chrome browsers.

Industry analysis from PCMag suggests that Microsoft may be encouraging users to move toward the flagship application to increase engagement with AI services that are not supported on the Outlook Lite version.

Users currently relying on Outlook Lite are advised to migrate to the full Outlook Mobile app or seek an alternative email client before the May 25, 2026, cutoff date to avoid a loss of service.
