Microsoft Weekly: Windows 11 25H2, Xbox Games Showcase, and More

Microsoft has made Windows 11 version 25H2 available to the general public, introducing a series of updates focused on artificial intelligence integration, user interface refinements, and expanded hardware support. The update is being delivered via the seeker experience, with Microsoft recommending the installation of the October 2025 security update (KB5066835) to ensure users receive the latest features through a controlled rollout process.

AI Integration and File Explorer Enhancements

A central component of the 25H2 release is the introduction of AI actions within File Explorer. Users can now right-click images to access a set of quick tasks, including Blur background, Erase objects, Remove background, and Bing Visual Search. For those utilizing keyboards, these options are also accessible via the Shift + F10 command.

Microsoft 365 subscribers have access to a Summarize action through Copilot for files stored in SharePoint and OneDrive. This feature allows users to generate quick summaries of documents without needing to open the files themselves, supported by deeper integration between OneDrive and Copilot to surface content contextually.

For commercial users signed in with school or work accounts, the update adds People icons to the Activity and Recommended sections. Hovering over these icons reveals Microsoft 365 People cards, which provide information regarding who is connected to a specific file and the nature of that connection.

Interface and Gaming Updates

The Windows 11 Widgets board has received a visual overhaul for its Discover feed. The refreshed layout is designed to be more organized and personalized, featuring Copilot-curated stories that combine images, videos, and summaries from trusted publishers.

Gaming improvements are also a priority in the 25H2 cycle. The update includes Gaming Copilot integration and general gaming boosts. Microsoft has provided driver updates specifically for the 25H2 version to improve stability and performance.

High-Refresh Rate Display Support

In a separate development related to display capabilities, Microsoft released a non-security preview update, KB5079391, on March 26, 2026. This update introduced support for display refresh rates above 1,000Hz, with some reporting that support actually extends up to 5,000Hz.

This technical expansion follows the unveiling of dual-mode gaming monitors at CES 2026 by manufacturers including Philips, AOC, and Acer, which hit 1,000Hz at a 720p resolution. The update also included improvements to HDR reliability, auto-rotation, and power efficiency for monitors connected via USB4 that are in sleep mode.

Although Microsoft pulled the KB5079391 update on March 27, 2026, due to installation issues, the company indicated that these display improvements will eventually be integrated into the OS.

Deployment and Compatibility

Many of the features introduced in 25H2 are also becoming available for users on version 24H2, as both versions share the same servicing branch. Beyond the OS updates, Microsoft is also preparing for a new Xbox Games Showcase and continuing to roll out enhancements for Copilot+ PCs, developer tools, and overall system security.
