While political instability frequently enough overshadows environmental concerns in the Middle East and North Africa, the region is grappling with increasing water scarcity, extreme heat, and desertification. These challenges, affecting over 500 million people, highlight the urgent need for climate action and drought resilience.
Saudi Arabia is taking a leading role by spearheading initiatives to combat these issues.The Middle East Green Initiative aims to bolster regional cooperation in addressing climate change. Additionally, the Kingdom is driving the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, which focuses on assisting the most vulnerable countries in coping with drought conditions.
Launched at the 2024 UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership has already mobilized over $3 billion.The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that every dollar invested in land restoration can yield up to $30 in economic and environmental benefits, making it a high-return investment.
