Middle East on Brink of Chaos: Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Escalates Amid Devastating Blasts, Sparking Global Fears of Catastrophe
Escalating Tensions: Israel and Hezbollah Intensify Fighting Along Lebanese Border
Since the simultaneous explosion of pagers and portable radios carried by members of Hezbollah, a pro-Iranian armed faction in Lebanon, last week, Israel and Hezbollah have intensified their fighting along the Lebanese border, raising fears of an all-out war.
According to Reuters and the BBC, the Israeli army announced that around 150 rockets, missiles, and other missiles launched within Lebanon the night before and this morning were heading towards Israeli territory.
Thousands of Israelis were forced to shelter in bomb shelters as some flew longer than previous attacks, while homes near Haifa were damaged and vehicles burned.
Pro-Iranian militants in Iraq also claimed in a statement that they launched a drone attack against Israel early in the morning.
The Israeli army said, “Hezbollah has fired 115 missiles towards civilian areas in northern Israel over the past few hours, and is currently hitting targets belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Lebanon.”
The Israeli army claimed to have attacked more than 400 military targets, including Hezbollah rocket launchers, and that most of the rockets fired from Lebanon and Iraq were intercepted by its own air defense system.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would “take whatever steps are necessary” to restore security and return people near the border between Israel and Lebanon safely to their homes.
Prime Minister Netanyahu claimed that Israel had “dealt an unimaginable blow” to Hezbollah, but Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Kasem, declared that “threats do not stop us” and “we are ready to face all military possibilities.”
As both sides escalated fighting, Gini Hennis-Plachardt, the UN’s special coordinator for Lebanon, expressed concern.
The White House said the escalation in fighting was not in the “best interests” of Israel, and the European Union expressed “tremendous concern.” British Foreign Secretary David Lammey called for an “immediate ceasefire”.
