Despite repeated warnings from U.S. officials, the situation in the Middle East continues to worsen. The Israeli military carried out additional airstrikes targeting Hezbollah weapons in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, and an evacuation order was issued for civilians in the area.
According to CNN on the 28th (local time), U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken said at a press conference in New York that day, “The Middle East and the world are facing a dangerous moment,” and “The choices that all parties in the Middle East make over the next few days will affect this region.” “It will determine our path forward and have a significant impact for years to come.”
“I believe we must move forward through diplomacy, not conflict,” he said, emphasizing that “the most important thing to do through diplomacy is to first stop attacking each other.” He added, “Through that time, we will be able to see whether a broader diplomatic agreement can be reached.”
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also said, “An all-out war between Lebanon, Hezbollah, and Israel would have devastating consequences for all parties to the conflict,” and added, “It is expected that there will be casualties equal to or greater than those seen in the Gaza Strip.”
“All-out war must be avoided and a diplomatic solution is the best way to make progress,” he said. “It is the fastest way to ensure that Israeli refugees and Lebanese people on the border between our two countries can return home.”
However, despite this pressure from the United States, Israel’s airstrikes did not stop. The Israeli military issued a statement today saying it was carrying out airstrikes targeting Hezbollah-owned weapons stored under civilian buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs. An evacuation order was issued for civilians in the area.
The previous afternoon, the Israeli military had carried out a precision airstrike on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Analysis suggests that the airstrike was aimed at Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, but there are conflicting opinions about his fate.
