Douville had put writing on hold, but the story of Mik Jones was already brewing. She needed to carve out time in her busy schedule to bring it to life. A fan of C.J. Box, Douville says she writes the kind of action-packed adventure novels she enjoys reading.
“I had this story in my head for a very long time,” Douville said. “Having my hero be a doctor for Doctors Without Borders is perfect: I can send him to all the hot spots on the planet.”
Mik Jones faces numerous challenges unrelated to medicine.”I have a lot of inventiveness to invent all kinds of scenes,” she added.
For research on navigation and cargo ships,Douville consulted retired commander Jean Proteau. “He was extraordinarily patient with me,” Douville said. “He answered all my questions and offered suggestions. He’s such an vital resource! He gave me credibility: he reread the terms I used.without him,I wouldn’t have had this authenticity.”
Douville added, “I gave him challenges.For exmaple, I needed a good hiding place on the boat. He’s the one who found it for me!” He described the engine room’s soundscape, ”He told me about the whistling and rumbling.” He even gave her a tour of a cargo ship docked in montreal in March 2020,just before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
