Prime Video’s television adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel Carrie, created by Mike Flanagan, covers the entire arc of the original book across eight episodes while introducing major narrative changes that set up potential future seasons. Yahoo.com and ScreenRant.com reported that the series brings the 1970s-set story into the modern day and keeps the titular character alive at the end of the narrative.

Adapting Stephen King For Prime Video

Mike Flanagan created the Prime Video series to operate on multiple levels by bringing the source material into the current era, expanding on characters and subplots from the book that were previously cut from feature-length films, and introducing entirely new elements. Men’s Health reported that the first season covers the entire arc of the original novel, including the prom night massacre and its aftermath. Brian De Palma directed the 1976 film adaptation, while later film versions were released in 2002 and 2013. Flanagan explained to Men’s Health that introducing major changes was essential to gaining Stephen King’s involvement as an executive producer.

The changes were what excited him, because I think he loved De Palma’s movie. It’d already been done. Changes were the thing that got him to sit forward and be like, Oh, well, this could be actually really interesting. This could be really different.

Expanding The Carrie Universe And Cult Elements

ScreenRant.com reported that the series explores the modern-day existence of Carrie White after the sudden death of her father exposes her upbringing by her mother, Margaret. Carrie subsequently faces bullying from Chris Hargensen before attending prom with Tommy Norris, which culminates in a massacre triggered by a pig’s blood prank. Unlike previous adaptations, Flanagan’s series keeps Carrie alive and introduces a mysterious cult or coven led by Adelaide, played by Kate Siegel. ScreenRant.com noted that while King’s original novel hinted at other people possessing abilities similar to Carrie’s, no prior screen adaptation permitted the character to live long enough to encounter others like her.

The series also introduces the character Amanda, played by Katee Sackhoff, who is revealed to be Emmaline’s mother and an operative tracking powered individuals. Summer H. Howell portrays Carrie in the series, while Thalia Dudek plays Emaline, a powered individual who rescues Carrie from her hometown after her mother attempts to murder her. Howell told ScreenRant.com that she was excited by the exploration of the TK gene and the inclusion of multiple powered women in the narrative.

Planning For A Three-Season Arc

Flanagan stated in interviews with Collider and Men’s Health that he envisions the series spanning three seasons as a cohesive trilogy. While his immediate focus remained on the release and reception of the first season, he acknowledged that the narrative leaves significant room to explore the legacy of gifted women and the motives of the newly introduced cult. ScreenRant.com reported that Howell expressed optimism about returning to portray Carrie’s future journey as she processes the trauma of the prom massacre and her broader place in the world.
