Mike Love Remembers Brian Wilson, beach Boys Legend
Following the death of Brian Wilson at age 82, Beach Boys co-founder Mike Love shared a heartfelt tribute to his cousin and longtime bandmate. Love joined Al Jardine in remembering the legendary songwriter’s impact on music and culture.
Love described Wilson as not just the heart, but the soul of the Beach Boys’ sound. He recalled knowing there was somthing “otherworldly” about Wilson from the moment they sang together. Love emphasized Wilson’s unmatched musical gifts and the profound emotions he poured into every note, forever changing the course of music. The Beach Boys’ unique sound helped define the California sound and the surf music genre.
Love reflected on their shared journey, acknowledging the “moments of brilliance, heartbreak, laughter, complexity and most of all, LOVE.” He noted that despite the ups and downs, their love for each other and his awe for Wilson’s talent never wavered. The collaboration between Love and Wilson gave the world “the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedom,” creating music that evoked an endless summer and limitless possibilities. Their Pet Sounds album and hit singles like “God Only Knows” and ”Good Vibrations” became cultural touchstones.
Love praised Wilson for allowing the Beach Boys to “show the world what vulnerability and brilliance sound like in harmony.” He described Wilson as fragile, intense, funny, and one of a kind.The Beach Boys were inducted into the rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Paul McCartney, in his induction speech at the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000, hailed wilson as “one of the great American geniuses.”
“Today, the world lost a genius, and I lost a cousin by blood and my partner in music,” Love said. “Brian Wilson wasn’t just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound.”
Addressing Wilson directly, Love concluded, “Brian, you once asked, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older?’ Now you are timeless.” He wished Wilson peace and said he would be missed forever.
