The UFC has officially announced its return to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, with a welterweight main event featuring Mike Malott against Gilbert Burns. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Canada Life Centre.

This marks the first time the promotion has visited the province of Manitoba since December 2017. The bout serves as a significant crossroads for both athletes, pairing a veteran former title challenger with a rising Canadian contender.

Malott Seeks Main Event Breakthrough

Mike Malott, a 34-year-old fighter from Waterdown, Ontario, enters this contest seeking his first UFC main event appearance. He currently holds a professional MMA record of 13-2-1, with a 6-1 record inside the UFC.

Malott Seeks Main Event Breakthrough

Malott is currently riding a three-fight winning streak. His most recent victories include a knockout of Charles Radtke at UFC 315 in May 2025 and a unanimous decision victory over Kevin Holland at a UFC event in Vancouver in October 2025.

Having earned his UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021, Malott has experienced only one defeat in the Octagon, which came against Neil Magny. A victory over a high-profile opponent like Burns is viewed as a primary path for Malott to break into the upper tier of the 170-pound division.

Burns Facing Career Crossroads

Gilbert Burns brings a wealth of experience to the bout as a decorated BJJ world champion and former welterweight title challenger. However, the 39-year-old is currently navigating the longest losing streak of his professional career.

Burns holds a professional record of 22-9 MMA and 15-9 in the UFC. He has suffered four consecutive defeats, with his most recent loss occurring in May 2025 at UFC Vegas 106, where he was stopped in the first round by Michael Morales.

Despite the recent struggle, all four of Burns’ recent losses have been against ranked competition, including Belal Muhammad, Jack Della Maddalena, Sean Brady and Morales. Burns has not secured a victory since April 2023, when he defeated Jorge Masvidal via decision at UFC 287.

Event Details and Outlook

The matchup is set to take place in front of a Canadian crowd, a factor that has historically benefited Malott in previous home-soil appearances.

The UFC has confirmed the following details for the event:

  • Date: Saturday, April 18, 2026
  • Location: Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
  • Main Event: Gilbert Burns vs. Mike Malott (Welterweight)

While the main event has been finalized, the UFC is expected to announce additional bouts for the Winnipeg card in the coming weeks.
