Mike Santana, a prominent star in TNA Wrestling, has bravely shared a deeply personal story, revealing the connection between his struggles with addiction and his unhappiness during his time with All Elite Wrestling (AEW).In a candid interview, santana detailed how his inability to effectively communicate his frustrations led him down a perilous path, ultimately prioritizing his sobriety and requesting his release from the company.
From AEW Frustration to a Fight for Sobriety
SantanaS journey to sobriety has been a public one, and he’s now connecting the dots between his professional habitat and his personal battles. Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Santana confirmed he considered remaining with AEW, but the pervasive unhappiness proved too detrimental to his well-being.
“I could have, yeah,” Santana explained. “I care and I love this too much to just, I don’t know, man. I just couldn’t sit on my ass. I could not do it. That whole situation, and that whole time period was a big contributor to my addiction issues too, because I was just so unhappy. I didn’t know how to communicate that very well, because I was angry. And like they say, you can’t react off of emotion, and that was the only way I was gonna react. So me not knowing how to communicate that is what made me, I guess, drown into myself.”
This admission highlights a critical issue often overlooked in the high-pressure world of professional wrestling: the importance of mental health and emotional intelligence. Santana’s experiance underscores the potential consequences when athletes feel unable to voice their concerns or navigate challenging professional dynamics.
Repeated Requests for Release & Prioritizing Health
Santana didn’t passively endure his unhappiness. He actively sought a solution, repeatedly requesting his release from AEW. however, those requests were initially denied. He was firm in his message to the company: his sobriety was non-negotiable.”Yeah, more than once… It was always, ‘We’ll figure it out,'” Santana recalled. “At that time, I was like, I’m going to continue doing the Indies and doing what I got to do to continue building myself and staying busy. I made it very clear when I came back that I wasn’t going to come back into a situation that I was in before, and that got me to where I was. As an addict, I put my sobriety first before anything, so I’m not gonna go into a situation that is going to compromise that. So I was like, Listen, I gotta do what I gotta do for me.”
This demonstrates a powerful act of self-advocacy. Santana’s decision to prioritize his health, even in the face of professional obstacles, is a testament to his strength and commitment to recovery. It also serves as a crucial message to others struggling with addiction: seeking help and prioritizing well-being are paramount.
