Mike Santana retained the TNA World Championship in a hard-fought main event against Rich Swann on Thursday night’s episode of “TNA Impact.” The match, which aired on April 23, 2026, was widely praised as a potential Match of the Year candidate by commentators and wrestling analysts.
Santana entered the bout as the reigning and defending TNA World Champion, having reclaimed the title at the “iMPACT” premiere on AMC in January. This marked his fourth successful title defense, having previously faced opponents such as Frankie Kazarian, Steve Maclin, and Eddie Edwards.
Rich Swann, a former one-time Impact World and TNA World Heavyweight Champion, received the title challenge at Santana’s request the previous week. The last time Swann had competed for the top title was against Josh Alexander at No Surrender in 2023. In recent months, Swann has been mentoring the BDE faction, which signed with TNA earlier in 2026.
The bout featured numerous near-falls and high-impact maneuvers from both competitors. Swann landed several lighting kicks on Santana, including one that connected after Santana flew off the top rope. Swann also countered Santana with a Canadian Destroyer attempt and hit a handspring cutter, avalanche rana, and frog splash during the match.
For his part, Santana responded with a superplex from the top rope and later hit a Spin the Block discus lariat out of nowhere to secure the victory. Throughout the contest, both men kicked out of multiple pin attempts, showcasing their resilience and in-ring awareness.
Commentary teams lauded the effort displayed by both wrestlers. Matthew Rehwoldt, known on commentary as “Drama King,” urged viewers to get off their couches and acknowledge the performance, stating there was nothing detracting from what both men had accomplished in the ring. Tom Hannifan added that, in his opinion, the match qualified as a TNA Match of the Year candidate.
The match was given significant time to develop, with entrances beginning when 30 minutes remained on the broadcast and the actual competition lasting close to 20 minutes. This allowed both athletes to showcase their technical abilities and storytelling in what was described as a back-and-forth encounter where neither man could gain a sustained advantage for long.
For Santana, the victory continued his recent reign as TNA World Champion, which began when he won the title back in January. For Swann, the performance reinforced his status as a top-tier performer in TNA despite not capturing the championship on this occasion. The contest was framed as a reward by Santana for Swann’s personal growth and turnaround outside the ring.
