Milan Bribery Probe: Government Officials Investigated in Mediobanca Case
Government Under scrutiny amidst Banking Deal Allegations
Milan, Italy – The Italian government is facing intense scrutiny following allegations of undue pressure exerted on members of Mediobanca, a prominent investment bank, concerning the acquisition of Monte dei paschi di Siena (MPS) and Banca generali.
According to reports from Lettera43, an online news publication, the Milan Prosecutor’s Office has reportedly opened an inquiry into potential “crimes of concussion” involving two high-ranking government officials. The inquiry was allegedly triggered by a complaint filed by a Mediobanca member. Sources cited by Lettera43 claim to possess recordings that purportedly document pressure from the highest levels of government on Mediobanca members. The alleged pressure aimed to sway them towards supporting the MPS acquisition and dissuading them from participating in Banca Generali’s operations.Thes allegations, if substantiated, could significantly undermine Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti’s efforts to establish a “Third banking pole.” Giorgetti is also the first shareholder of MPS.
the unfolding situation adds to existing scrutiny surrounding the government’s financial dealings. An ongoing investigation is already examining the circumstances surrounding the Treasury’s sale of a 15% stake in MPS last winter to Caltagirone,Delfin, and BPM through Banca Akros (BPM).This transaction, which preceded Mediobanca’s increased stake in MPS, is under investigation by magistrates who are exploring the possibility of an undisclosed agreement or coordinated action between the buyers and the intermediary.
