Argentina’s President Javier Milei is actively pursuing a new bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The previous agreement concluded in December, prompting Milei to seek fresh financial assistance for the contry.
In an effort to expedite the process, Milei issued an executive order designed to circumvent the need for congressional approval of the deal. Argentina’s finance minister stated March 30 the government’s aspiration to receive 40% of the total funds—perhaps amounting to $20 billion—as an initial upfront payment.
Milei traveled to Mar-a-Lago three days later to meet with Donald Trump, hoping the former U.S. president could play a vital role in securing the financial agreement.
What’s next
Argentina awaits further negotiations with the IMF to finalize the bailout details and secure the much-needed financial support.
