Millimages Announces Pre-Production on Lascars 2: Iconic Animated Sequel Set in Marseille
Millimages, a long-established independent animation studio in Europe, has announced pre-production for the second film in its Lascars series. This sequel arrives fifteen years after the first movie and sees characters José and Tony embarking on new adventures in Marseille.
The initial Lascars series debuted with 60 shorts in 1998, gaining cult status with episodes like “Baston de Regards,” “Cigarette,” and “J’Fais d’la Thaï.” The first feature film, released in 2009, achieved over 500,000 cinema admissions and was featured in the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival.
Bonnie Lener, Producer and Head of Development, stated, “Lascars is iconic. We are excited to work on this highly anticipated sequel.” She emphasized the series’ popularity in France and the commitment to maintaining high-quality animation and humor.
Currently, the team at the Millimages studio in the 11th arrondissement of Paris is developing storyboards and animatics. The project received a positive response during its pitch at Cartoon Movie 2023, with a teaser video garnering over 700,000 views on X (Twitter) and being featured on the website Konbini.
Synopsis: Ten years after their first adventures, José and Tony leave Condé sur Ginette for the suburbs of Marseille. They aim to find Tony’s mother, who is believed to hold an inheritance worth millions. However, with José soon to be a father and Tony struggling in life, their mission quickly unravels.
The screenplay for Lascars 2 is written by the original team, including IZM, Boris Dolivet, and Alexis Dolivet. Laurent Nicolas directs the film, having also directed Season 1 of the original series. Millimages plans to bring back some original voice actors, like IZM and Vincent Cassel, while also introducing new talent from today’s comedy scene.
Key partners include Umédia and Apollo, who are co-producing the film, with Apollo handling worldwide distribution. Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service, Max, will be the broadcast partner in France.
Lener and General Manager Adrien Moretto aim to complete production of Lascars 2 for a release in the second half of 2025.
