Disciplinary Action Taken Against Clerical Worker for Losing 9 Million Yen in Cash
A clerical worker in his 40s, employed at an elementary school in Ibaraki Prefecture, has been given a 12-month suspension for losing over 9 million yen in cash that he had withdrawn from the school’s savings account.
The incident occurred between 2018 and 2020, during which the man withdrew cash from a savings account used to collect child fees and school lunch fees at the municipal elementary school in Tsukuba City. He kept some of the money on his desk in the staff room, but unfortunately lost a total of more than 9 million yen.
In an interview, the male office worker explained that he had accidentally thrown the money away along with an envelope containing other documents. This incident led to Tsukuba City filing a police report on suspicion of embezzlement, resulting in the man’s resignation on request.
The Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education announced the disciplinary action on the 26th, emphasizing the importance of responsible financial management within the education sector.
