In the crucial hours following disasters like earthquakes, finding survivors is a race ⁣against time. A joint effort by EU and Japanese researchers aims to make this search and rescue work safer and more efficient using robust miniature robots equipped with advanced sensors.

The CURSOR⁤ project, a four-year international initiative involving organizations from Europe, ⁤Japan, Norway, and ⁣the ⁢UK, has developed a new generation of tools. These tools combine robotics, drone technology, and chemical sensing⁤ to transform how emergency teams operate in disaster zones. Tohoku University also participated in the project.

Tiina Ristmäe, a research coordinator at the German Federal Agency for Technical relief, noted the limitations of current technologies supporting frist responders. ⁣The new rescue kit aims to help rescue workers locate trapped survivors faster while improving their own safety.

Meet SMURF

A key component of this effort is⁢ the Soft Miniaturized Underground Robotic Finder (SMURF). This small, two-wheeled robot is designed to navigate thru collapsed buildings and rubble piles to locate trapped individuals. Operators can remotely⁢ control the SMURF from a safe distance.

professor Satoshi Tadokoro, a robotics expert at Tohoku University,⁢ explained that the two-wheeled design proved most effective⁣ after testing various options.The ⁣SMURF moves through debris to find victims, with multiple robots covering the entire rubble pile.

Sniffing for Survivors

The SMURF’s “head” contains video and thermal cameras, microphones, speakers, and a chemical sensor called the SNIFFER. The SNIFFER detects substances like CO2 and ammonia, distinguishing between living and deceased individuals, even amidst smoke or rain. Ristmäe said that⁤ first responders found the SNIFFER’s details highly valuable for prioritizing assistance to those⁤ still ‍alive.

Drone Delivery

To enhance the SMURF’s reach, researchers integrated drone support. Customized drones deliver robots to hard-to-reach areas. Ristmäe said that multiple robots can ⁣be transported and dropped in different locations simultaneously.

The CURSOR team also developed aerial tools to survey disaster zones. One drone, the⁣ “mothership,” acts as a flying communications hub. Other drones use ground-penetrating radar to detect buried victims and capture footage for detailed 3D maps, helping⁤ teams plan operations strategically and reducing time spent⁤ in perilous locations.

Testing in the Field

The system has undergone real-world testing, including trials in Japan and europe.⁤ A ⁤extensive test in Afidnes, greece, in November 2022, simulated a disaster scenario⁣ using the full range of CURSOR technologies.

Although not yet commercially available, the prototype rescue kit has generated significant ⁤interest. Ristmäe said that they have received hundreds of requests to buy it, but they have to explain that it’s not deployable yet. The CURSOR ⁤team seeks further funding to enhance⁣ the technology and bring it to market.

“In the field of search and rescue, we don’t have many⁤ technologies that support first responders, and ⁤the technologies that we do ⁤have, have a lot of limitations.”

What’s next

The CURSOR team is actively seeking additional funding to refine their disaster response technology and bring it‍ to market, possibly revolutionizing future rescue operations.
