Minimum Wage Hike: Food Prices Expected to Surge in 2025

Minimum Wage Hike: Food Prices Expected to Surge in 2025

November 20, 2024 Catherine Williams Business

Food Prices Likely to Rise in 2025 Due to Minimum Wage Increase

Experts warn that food prices for basic items may increase next year. A rise in the minimum wage set for January will likely lead to higher overall wages, pushing many shops to raise pay by at least five percent.

According to Excel Recruitment’s Grocery Retail Salary Guide for 2025, the minimum pay for workers has risen by 32 cents since 2020, adding pressure on retailers already struggling with costs. New pension rules and extended sick leave benefits have further increased expenses.

Nikki Murran, Director of Grocery Retail at Excel Recruitment, noted that grocery stores are under strain from costly changes like the Deposit Return Scheme and rising retail crime, which necessitate increased spending on security. These changes affect wages across all levels, prompting retailers to develop competitive hiring strategies.

The report highlights that businesses must invest heavily in fresh food products to remain competitive. Many retailers are improving their deli, bakery, and produce sections. Some are even hiring chefs, bakers, and butchers to draw in customers.

Murran indicated that while food prices might rise, smaller businesses could face closure due to rising labor costs, extra sick pay, and pension auto-enrollment. She emphasized that most retailers work hard to keep prices competitive amid these challenges.

The focus on fresh food quality and service helps retailers differentiate themselves. Many stores are expanding their fresh food departments and enhancing their offerings to attract and retain customers.
