A Day of Remembrance
Today marks Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day, a time to honor all Australians who served in the Malayan Emergency, operations along the Thai-malay border, and the Indonesian Confrontation. This year holds particular significance as it commemorates the 75th anniversary of Australian involvement in the Malayan Emergency, which began in 1948.
Australian Involvement and Sacrifice
Over 7,000 Australian personnel actively participated in the Malayan Emergency, followed by approximately 2,000 in subsequent counter-insurgency operations on the Thai-Malay border. Tragically, 39 Australian service members lost their lives during the Malayan Emergency, with an additional two fatalities occurring during the Thai-Malay border operations. Their sacrifice is remembered today.
Lessons Learned in Jungle Warfare
Australian forces gained invaluable expertise in jungle warfare during this period. The skills and knowledge acquired proved crucial during Australia’s later contributions to the Vietnam War, demonstrating the lasting impact of the Malayan Emergency on Australian military strategy and capabilities.
Securing Sovereignty and Building Alliances
Operating in the spirit of the ANZAC tradition, Australian deployments played a vital role in securing Malaysian sovereignty and defeating the insurgency. This effort laid the foundation for the strong and enduring relationship between Australia and Malaysia that exists today.
National Commemoration
At today’s National Commemorative Service, flags will be lowered, and a catafalque party will render honors as the nation pauses to remember and commemorate the service of all those who served in these conflicts. We honor those who served and sacrificed, and pledge to remember them.
Lest we forget.
