Direct Train to Yogyakarta: Ministers test New Route Ahead of Holiday Rush
Jakarta – in planning for the upcoming holiday season, Indonesian goverment officials embarked on a test run of a new direct train service from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Advancement Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, agrarian and Spatial planning Minister/Head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) Nusron wahid, and Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Kartika Wirjoatmodjo were among those who boarded the train at Gambir Station in Jakarta on Monday, December 16, 2024.
The direct train, which aims to reduce travel time to approximately six hours, is being evaluated as a potential solution to ease transportation congestion during the christmas and New Year holidays.
“Tonight, we will experience the direct train from Gambir Station to Tugu Station in yogyakarta,” AHY stated during a press conference on Christmas and New Year transportation preparations at Gambir Station. “This journey, estimated to take around six hours, promises a comfortable and efficient option for travelers.”
AHY emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring smooth travel for citizens during the holiday season. Following the train journey, he plans to inspect several stations and bus terminals in Yogyakarta to assess their readiness for the anticipated surge in travelers.
“We will also check the functionality of toll roads with the Minister of public Works,” AHY added. “Our goal is to ensure the government’s presence and support for the public,especially during challenging weather conditions.”
PT KAI President Director Didiek Hartantyo highlighted the time-saving advantage of the direct train compared to regular services on the same route.
“The difference in travel time compared to regular trains is approximately 20 minutes,as this train will not make any stops,” Hartantyo explained.
He assured the public that safety measures have been thoroughly implemented during the trial run.”This test will serve as a valuable learning experience for the railway industry, enabling us to continuously improve our services and cater to the needs of the community,” Hartantyo concluded.
