Minnesota Lawmaker’s Husband Killed in Shooting; Manhunt Underway
The husband of a Minnesota state lawmaker was killed in what Gov. Tim Walz called a politically motivated assassination. Another state senator and his wife were also shot and injured. A manhunt is underway for the suspect, who authorities believe is on foot.
Mark Hortman, husband of state Rep. Melissa Hortman, was killed in their home. Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were injured and have undergone surgery, Walz said Saturday at a press conference.
According to authorities, the shooter impersonated a law enforcement officer and went to both lawmakers’ homes, which are located in the suburbs north of Minneapolis.Brooklyn Police Chief Mark Bruley said police found a manifesto in the suspect’s car that identified “many lawmakers and other officials,” including Hortman and Hoffman.
“This was an act of targeted political violence,” Walz said. “Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. We don’t settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint.”
Police were proactively checking on Hortman’s home Saturday morning after hearing of the shooting at Hoffman’s residence. Thay found a vehicle resembling a police car with emergency lights on in the driveway, and a suspect dressed as a police officer was exiting the house, Bruley said. The suspect fired at officers, who returned fire before the suspect retreated into the house.
“It was not a real police officer,” Bruley stated. “This is somebody that clearly had been impersonating a police officer.” He added that the vehicle looked exactly like a police SUV and was equipped with emergency lights. The suspect was also wearing a vest with a Taser, other equipment, and a badge similar to Bruley’s.
Bruley advised residents to call 911 to confirm the identity of anyone appearing to be a police officer who comes to their door.
The FBI is assisting local and state partners in the investigation. Former President Donald Trump said in a statement that Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI are investigating the situation and will prosecute anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law.
Hortman served as Speaker of the state House of Representatives from 2019 to 2025 and championed free school lunches and gun control measures. She and her husband are survived by two children.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., expressed her condolences and gratitude to law enforcement. Former U.S. Rep. Gabby giffords, who was shot in the head at a political event in 2011, said she was “devastated” by the killings, calling Hortman a true public servant.
walz later suggested on X, formerly Twitter, that people should not attend political rallies in Minnesota until the suspect is apprehended. Protests have been scheduled across the country as part of “No Kings Day,” in response to the military holding a parade Saturday in Washington, D.C., on President Trump’s birthday.
