– Minnesota Officials Accuse FBI of Blocking ICE Shooting Investigation
Federal Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Withdraws From Inquiry of ICE Shooting in Minneapolis
Tensions escalated between Minnesota and federal authorities after the FBI assumed sole control of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis mother of three, by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. The shooting sparked protests and condemnation from local officials.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) initially agreed to a joint investigation with the FBI,but the federal agency “reversed course,” according to BCA Superintendent Drew Evans. Evans stated the BCA will no longer have access to evidence, case materials, or interviews related to the shooting.
“As an inevitable result, the BCA has reluctantly withdrawn from the investigation,” Evans said.
The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood. Good was a U.S.citizen.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a Democrat, described the FBI’s decision as “deeply disturbing” in a CNN interview. He affirmed the state’s ability to investigate the shooting independently, even without federal cooperation.
Protests have taken place at the scene of the shooting and throughout Minneapolis. Star Tribune and Getty Images have provided coverage of the demonstrations.
