Unsealed court documents are providing more insight into the motives and actions of the suspect in the Hortman-Hoffman shooting. Dylan Boelter is charged in connection with the shooting that killed two and injured two others.
Evidence at the Scene
According to the federal criminal complaint, police encountered Boelter around 3:30 a.m. Saturday outside the Hortmans’ residence. After allegedly fatally shooting the Hortmans, Boelter fled on foot. Officers in pursuit discovered a ballistic vest, handgun magazines, a flashlight, a face mask, and a Beretta 92 9mm pistol.
The complaint states that investigators identified Boelter through a storage unit bill bearing his name, license plates registered to Boelter and his wife that had been removed from a vehicle outside the Hortmans’ home, and pieces of the Beretta handgun-purchased by Boelter in 2020-along with an abandoned ammo magazine. Authorities say the ammunition matched bullet casings found near the Hortmans’ home.
Hoffmans Recount Night of Terror
Yvette Hoffman, who sustained eight gunshot wounds, was released from the hospital Thursday evening. Her husband, a state senator, suffered nine gunshot wounds and remains in serious but stable condition.
In a statement released Thursday night, the Hoffman family described being awakened at 2 a.m. by someone impersonating an officer who was banging on their door. The senator was shot as he lunged at the gunman, and his wife was shot while pushing the assailant out the door.
The Hoffmans’ daughter, Hope, secured the door and called 911, prompting a warning that a “politically motivated act was potentially underway,” according to the statement.
“We are grappling with the reality that we live in a world where public service carries such risks as being targeted as someone disagrees with you or doesn’t like what you stand for,” the family wrote. “As a society, as a nation, as a community, we must work together to return to a level of civility that allows us all to live peacefully. The future for our children depends on that. We will be praying for that work and appreciate all those who will join with us.”
